I'm hoping I can Gettier case how Hillel The Elder might explain communicating with the dead on one foot. So far it's looking unlikely with how long this is... but it's not impossible.

Say one calls upon the source compelled to self sacrifice. Many call this source 'God's Will', or 'The Humanity Within'. The more cynical of us; those who think that we're all p-zombies of Nature... they might call you 'Instinct'. Each of these names are basically their function. You could call the source of someone else who's long dead, and frankly I believe they might come. In truly contemplating these things they might offer counters; the essence of each of these 'subjects' fundamentally 'evoking' a reply. They might suggest a different, more proper name. By this point worldly attachments quickly become meaningless, so they might don a 'subject' that is a more 'proper explanation' of the situation you might be meditating. In this case they might call themselves 'Kindness' or other abstracts like 'Discipline' or 'Wisdom'.

Whichever 'subject' they might don post-mortem, the subject would absolutely be the 'I'. The source of the message, the one who decided to enact it, is expressed with a creative substitution itself. At some point a latin letter got conflated with your very essence; all because it was the most succinct way to communicate it to others nearby. The local religion used 'I' as its idol of the very spirit of 'Identity' or 'Origin', and you happened to learn that using that idol was a necessary ritual for your community. In worshipping this deity, this spirit, many choose to embody it by evoking all of its properties... With that preface, it makes sense that a spirit might 'don a subject' like 'Identity' or 'Origin' for practical reasons. It happens to get the job done sometimes; whether or not the subject is confused with the subject in question.
